Glebe Field Planning Update
UPDATE on erection of 14 new dwellings together with change of use of agricultural land to form public open space at Swimbridge Glebe Field
The NDDC Planning Committee took place on Wednesday 27th February at the Civic Centre, Barnstaple to discuss the Glebe Field. Jean Watkins at Planning Dept gave a very clear and concise presentation on the history of the project and the planning application. The outcome from that meeting was that both the planning applications for 44902 and 45152 have been deferred for negotiation. The Planning Authority will negotiate with the Developer and will look in particular at:
the access: to try and reinstate vehicle access through the housing estate as the vehicular access opposite the school has some serious visibility issues and if it is moved further up the hill will have a large cost impact as the drop from the road to the field is very steep.
affordable housing - the Planning Authority would ideally wish to secure 7 affordable houses, not 4 as indicated on the Plan (the 5th is the large Diocese house which is under question as being classed as affordable).
Albert Hall Showband at the Jubilee Hall
Albert Hall has been in touch to say how delighted the members of his band were with the reception they received for their concert in the Jubilee Hall on April 5th. There was a good audience for the event and it seemed as though everyone had a good time.
The band encourages new members and the proceeds from the evening will be a welcome top up to band funds, for purchase and maintenance of instruments and travel costs.
Several people have said that they would like more music events in the hall and the organisers were encouraged by the response to the Albert Hall Showband concert, so watch this space! Ideas being considered are a New Orleans/Dixieland Jazz evening and the return of the renowned acoustic blues musician, Jim Crawford.
If you have a special request phone or email Martin on 01271 831009 mksenvhealth@enterprise.net or contact Julie.
Architect for Jubilee Hall improvements appointed
The Jubilee Hall Committee has appointed architect, Jim Gardiner of the David Wilson Partnership to draw up plans for the Jubilee Hall improvement scheme. The Jubilee Hall Sub Committee invited seven architects for quotes, and short-listed three for an interview. Jim Gardiner of the David Wilson Partnership was outstanding in his presentation at interview with innovative ideas, common sense and importantly we all felt we could work well with him. He also has lots of experience in design for local community projects. The Jubilee Hall design should be with us in outline within the next eight weeks – watch this space!
Our many thanks to Cllr David Butt, Cllr David Luggar and Cllr Joe Tucker for supporting the Jubilee Hall Improvement Scheme - they have each kindly allocated £500 from their community budgets; a total of £1,500. This will be a great help towards the architect fees, which will cost in the region of £6k to take the scheme up to planning stage. The hall has already raised over £2k + the above £1.5k. We now need to start raising funds to make the improvement scheme a reality. It is expected that funding the building project will be through a combination of grants applications to several funders and community fundraising. If you have any fundraising ideas that you would like to put into action to help make our improved hall a reality, please let one of the Jubilee Hall Committee Members know or Julie on 830311 – we’d like to hear from you. Come and be part of it.
Swimbridge school are celebrating a good report from Inspectors
School Inspectors have given the thumbs up to Swimbridge Church of England Primary School saying the well-being and personal development of its pupils is outstanding. The Ofsted inspection team also upped the schools overall rating from “satisfactory” to “good”.
Personal development and well being of pupils is one of the five core areas examined. Inspector Martin James said “Pupils’ personal development is firmly based on the school’s very good provision for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development”. He added that pupils “played together happily and said bullying was not an issue”.
Other parts of the schools performance were uniformly good, including teaching and learning and the school curriculum. Mr James praised the relationship between teachers, and teaching assistants, class room management and planning.
Did you know?
• SWIMBRIDGE PRIMARY SCHOOL was the top Primary School in the SW (25th in England) in the 2003 primary league tables. 1st in North Devon in the 2005 & 2007 value-added tables & is recommended in the Good Schools Guide.
Fitness Pilates Class - only £3.50
Fitness Pilates Class led by a qualified fitness instructor only £3.50 every Thursday evening starting 1st May, 6.15 – 7.15 pm in Swimbridge Jubilee Hall
These sessions are suitable for a variety of people and there will be options for participants to choose their own level.
These sessions are not suitable for people with a current back or joint problem, also expectant mothers are advised not to attend.
The aim of the sessions is to enjoy yourself while increasing strength and balance, improve posture, enhance core stability and increase flexibility and mobility.
The exercises are practiced in various positions standing; laying face up and down and on your sides so you will need to bring something to lay on - this can be a yoga type mat, blanket or a camping foam roll, etc.
You need to wear clothing that allows you a good range of movement; these classes normally exercise without shoes.
Some key points you will learn are Pilates breathing, pelvic floor muscle engagement, finding your neutral spine position and good body alignment that will improve your posture and energy levels.

Hannaford Lane
There have been several reports of empty cider bottles in the river and along Hannaford Lane. As many as two a day are being collected from the river alone and a large number of empty cans have been discarded in the hedgerows along Hannaford Lane.
To whomever this concerns, PLEASE take your litter home – the cans and bottles are a danger to wildlife, it makes the village look untidy and it’s not fair to expect someone else to pick up your litter.
Village Hall Fundraising Ideas
The fundraising meeting for the hall was a success Amy McLaughlin and Trish O’Sullivan have come up with a great idea for a village street party – details will be available shortly. Other suggestions included a village lottery, a duck race, a 1940’s themed night, regular bingo, Sunday jazz, a antique roadshow and of course we are currently rehearsing for Theatre on the Move in July.
Watch this space for details.
If you have a fundraising idea to help make the improved hall a reality, please let us know. Come & be part of it.
For info phone Julie on 830311.
Village Hall Painting
The hall’s all spruced up thanks to Mick Bennett, Kelly Day, Amy McLaughlin, David Netherway Annie Urry-Clark, Saskia Verton-Smith and Julie Whitton for painting the village hall on Saturday 19th April. They managed to paint all the rooms on the day and it is now looking much brighter. Thank you also to Claire Hall, Malcolm Whitton and Ian Godfrey for helping to put it all back together again.
Village Hall Improvements
We’re almost there …. let’s make our improved hall a reality.
Our community has already raised a fantastic £4,000 – we now just need another £2,750 to take the architect plans up to planning stage.
To raise the rest, lots of events are being organised but to get to the planning stage more quickly we would be grateful for your help in any way you can, either by organising a fundraising event or if you wish a donation (anything gratefully received).
If you wish to give a donation, please pass into the Post Office or send to Lee Wadsworth, Jubilee Hall Treasurer, Mill House, Mill Court, Swimbridge, EX32 0PR. (cheques payable to Jubilee Hall).
Any help you can give is very much appreciated.
Architect Jim Gardiner of the David Wilson Partnership has been appointed and is “ready and set”. Please help us to make it “go”. Thank you.
Together we can make it happen.
Kids Set To Grow
Ian McLaughlin and Simeon Day have recently completed a wonderful wildlife and vegetable garden for the children at Swimbridge Primary School. The existing pond has been restored and a seating area, two vegetable planters and homes for birds and insects have been added. It’s now set to be the hub of all things wild and veggie with the garden being used for school lessons and after school clubs.
Originally Annie Clark's idea, the School PTA paid for the project and David Harrison at Jewsons in South Molton was very generous in his support and help with materials, whilst Ian and Simeon designed and built the garden for free.
Ian and Simeon have set up “garden by design” - a landscape gardening company specialising in environmentally friendly gardens.
If you want to find out more about their work visit: Garden By Design

FreeSat from the BBC & ITV Launches
Not to be confused with FreeSatFromSky, (which was hastily launched when the BBC announced Freesat), it currently offers 80 TV and Radio channels at startup and there will be over 230 by year end. Similar to Freeview in it's lineup the main benefit is to offer HDTV UK Wide, it also has the capacity for far more channels. HDTV on Freeview will be available at some point but only a limited number of channels are possible because of bandwidth restrictions.
You'll need a dish (an existing Sky dish will probably do) and a receiver specifically for Freesat. Receivers start at around £70 for Non HD boxes and a PVR (like Sky+) will launch soon. Also TVs with built in Freesat decoders are becoming available.
As you are probably aware Freeview will not be available in the bulk of Swimbridge until June 2009.
There's an amusing quick 'listen' podcast at frequencycast and the FreeSat website is at www.freesat.co.uk.
Those of you that currently have FreesatfromSky might Like to know that E4 and More4 are now available free to view and are no longer part of the Sky variety pay TV package.
Dog 'Litter' Bin
Mike Clift has asked for it to be mentioned that a dog litter bin has now been attached to the lamp post on the road in front of the allotments on the Square. Lee has stated that the bin will be emptied every week and has been kindly funded by the Parish Council.

... of Barnstaple Hill for cutting the grass around the Jubilee Hall. Yves has offered to cut the grass on a regular basis. However it would be very helpful if someone could share it with him. If you can lend a hand please let Julie know on 830311 – many thanks. The reason we have requested voluntary help is so that the Hall Committee can focus their funds towards the architect fees.

A note from PC Glen Clark
PC Glen Clark, our Neighbourhood Beat Manager has asked to include his note in the newsletter:
“I am writing to you in regards to reports of intimidating and threatening behaviour being committed by individuals in Swimbridge, specifically along the Station Hill area. What concerns me most is that this anti social behaviour, which will not be tolerated, has been directed to children as well as adults. As the village police officer, I would like to promote a reasonable attitude towards community well being. I do not want underlying issues to ruin the harmony of the village. Therefore I would like to encourage you all to report incidents of intimidating and threatening behaviour, specifying dates, times and the individuals committing the anti social behaviour.”
A Note from Erica Whiteley (nee Gooch)
Hi all, I have been chosen as the south west finalist for a children’s short story competition (by Fairy Non Bio). I am one of eleven finalists from all over the UK whose story about 'Kipper the Dog' has been short listed to win. I entered the competition as my daughter Madison loves Kipper the Dog stories and I thought how great it would be to write a story about her favourite character doing something that she loves to do - going to the beach hut! If my story gets the most votes I can win a fab holiday for my family, but better still, the story will be made into a keepsake book for my children Maddi & Jackson. Check out my story on www.softeningyourworld.com/offers_vote_for_your_favourite.htm and please support me by giving me your vote. (I’m number 8 - South West). Many thanks, Erica Whiteley.
PS: Help me get the most votes by telling all your friends and family to vote as well! Thank you.
Erica was brought up in the village and went to Swimbridge School and her parents live in the village. I’ve copied Erica’s story below:

Our thoughts are with Ruth Ellis, whose friend George Whittingham of Hannaford passed away at end of May. His funeral was on Wednesday 4 June at St James Church, Swimbridge. Donations in aid of St James Church.
Swimbridge Parklands Committe

We will be circulating a petition door to door setting out the committee's aims, or you can sign at the Post Office or Jack Russell Inn.

Jubilee Hall Plans
The architect plans for the improvements to the Jubilee Hall have now been drawn up. The site has had some severe restrictions due to location of the sewerage pipe which lies at an angle to the back of the hall which a building cannot be erected within 3 metres either side of the pipe. In addition there is an even bigger restriction in that a culvert pipe lies at an angle from the main road across the front of the Jubilee Hall and regulations state that a building cannot be erected within 7 metres either side of that pipe. The expense of moving these pipes is phenomenal - it therefore means that the Architect has had to come up with an innovative design that overcomes the logistics of the pipes to ensure the improvements will complement the existing hall yet taking it forward into the 21st century. The sub committee is very pleased with the designs and they will be shown to the village to shortly.
Theatre on the Move was a phenomenal success!
Theatre on the Move was a phenomenal success.
Directed by Saskia Verton-Smith and John Surman, and written by three local playwrights Tricia De Voysey, Rosie Godfrey and Hayley Graham, the four short plays set in four stunning locations, proved to be a big hit with the audiences. The feedback has been fantastic. Many people turned up not sure what to expect, but at the end of the evening came back elated and buzzing. We were very fortunate that the rain stayed away, particularly after so much over the past few weeks. Locations will soon be sought for next year’s event – it is certainly something that we want to build on. Theatre on the Move was a series of short original plays in different atmospheric outdoor locations in Swimbridge. These included a magical lake, sinister lime kilns, a Church and an old watermill. All of which set the scenes for four very different productions. Groups were led by some eccentric hosts who entertained and informed the walkers along the route.
Feedback has included: “What a fabulous evening, we really enjoyed the whole event. Well done to you and all involved.” “The hosts were great and very entertaining as they guided us around - it really was a unique event!” “Thanks very much for a brilliant evening.” “We really enjoyed the Theatre on the Move last night - well done to everyone!” It has even had some members of the audience phoning into Radio Devon!
The Police Juniors
The POLICE JUNIORS event held on Friday 11 July, organised by PC Glyn Clark, was a fantastic success. I’ve never seen traffic move so slowly through the village with all that police presence! Swimbridge Street Party
It also rained at SWIMBRIDGE STREET PARTY but that didn’t put anyone off having a fantastic time.
Note from Amy McLaughlin … The street party on Saturday 23rd August was a great success. There was a really good atmosphere thanks in no small part to all the musicians – Tom Whitton & friends (“The Bryan, Morrish & Whitton Project”, “Temper, Temper, Temperature” and “48 Tiles”), Matt Bluge and Dave Harrison followed by Shine in the evening.
At the risk of sounding like an Oscar acceptance speech……on behalf of Trish, Amy, Paul and Sim we’d like to thank all those who pulled out all the stops to make it the day it was – the organising committee, the stallholders, the barbecuers, bar staff, musicians, the games and raffle organisers, the duck race team, the face painters, the cake and scone bakers, the ice cream maker and everyone who helped to put up marquees, bunting and the fantastic lighting and then take it all down again on Sunday. Thanks to all those who loaned us kit. Thanks too to Cathy Karniewicz who gave up her time to do crafts with the children and to all those who donated the numerous prizes for the raffle. A special mention is deserved here to Dave Harrison and Jewsons, The Milky Way and to Jonathan Marshall for the falconry day. And finally… thanks to everyone who came out and supported the event despite the August weather.
BE EXTRA VIGILANT
Someone tried the backdoor of a house on Station Hill a few weeks ago. Luckily the home owners were in and the intruder ran off.
Welcome home to .....
..... Geoffrey, Kirsty, Georgia, Arthur & Hector Everett Brown of Heavenly House who have just come back to Swimbridge after spending a year in New Zealand.
Rain, Rain Go Away!
Ron Bachell gauges the rainfall in Swimbridge for the Met Office (via the Dept of Environment) and has done so since 1963/64. He confirms that we certainly have had a lot of rain; 156.5ml in July, 165.7ml of rain in August, and 17ml of rain came down on us on 1 September alone.
So in just two months and one day (July, Aug and 1st Sept) – our summer - Swimbridge had a total of 339.2ml, that's a village drenching 33.35 inches of rain, for all of us that haven't a clue what 339ml looks like!!
