Curry Evening

I hope everyone enjoyed the Curry Evening last Saturday.   Many thanks to all those who provided the curries and other bits and pieces and a special thanks to Graham who spent most of the evening beavering away in the kitchen boiling up mountains of rice!

Committee Meeting Report

The last committee meeting was held on 3rd February.  The main issues that I need to bring to your attention are as follows;

Forthcoming Events

Quiz and Poetry Recital Evening   This event will be held on Saturday 12 February in the Jubilee Hall at 7.30pm.   Contrary to what I said in the last newsletter the committee decided that the cost of entry should be £4.00 per head (half price for children) and not £6.00.  Ideally we would like teams of up to 4 people but you can form up into bigger teams if you really want to.

The format of the evening will be similar to previous Quiz nights with a series of rounds of questions on a variety of topics. However, this year we are introducing a slight variation by reciting poetry between rounds. As the night is close to St Valentine’s day, the committee thought that the theme should be love poems although please don’t be constrained by this.   The idea is that anyone can get up and recite a poem.   There is no obligation to do so but it would be ideal if we could have a man and woman recite a poem each between each round.

There will be tea/coffee and biscuits available and we will be holding a raffle at some point in the evening so if you have anything suitable for a raffle prize, please bring it along.   If you want anything other than tea or coffee then please feel free to bring your drinks along with you.

It would be great to see as many of you there as possible and if you can bring along friends and family who are non members, even better.

Pancake Evening   Because of a double booking of the Jubilee Hall, the date of the Pancake evening has been put back a week to Saturday 19 March 2011, starting at 7.30 pm.   This evening will follow the same format as previous Pancake evenings.   Cost will be £6.00 per head (half price for children).  If you have a favourite pancake filling, then please bring this along with you. There will be tea/coffee and biscuits available and there will be a raffle.   Please bring your own alcoholic/soft drinks if you so wish.

Recruitment  In last month’s Newsletter I mentioned our drive to recruit new members.  The committee is currently looking at a couple of initiatives to see if we can boost our numbers but, in the meantime, please can I ask you all to try and encourage friends and family members to come along to our events.  The more exposure we can give of our activities to people outside the Association, the more likely we are to get new members.

Visit by the French There is no further news at this stage regarding the French visit beyond what I told you in the December Newsletter.   However, you may remember that I did mention last time that we were looking to put on some entertainment for the French at the Dinner Dance on Saturday.  So far we have had a couple of suggestions of what we could do.   Please give this some thought and let any of the committee members know your ideas.

Other Events    Don’t forget that the U3A French Conversation Group will be having a Paris by Night dinner in the Petroc Restaurant on Tuesday 8 March 2011.  The Twinning Association members have been invited to this event and as far as I am aware there are about 10 of us going so far.   If you wish to go please book yourselves directly with the restaurant on 01271 338083.

Swimbridge Website    At the moment this site holds the latest Newsletter but in the future I intend to put on more information about the Association covering our aims and activities and including details of our social programme for the year.   If you have any ideas regarding what else we might include, please let me know.

Fred Tyler   Sadly I have to report that Fred Tyler suffered a stroke earlier this week and was taken to hospital.  He is now conscious but has partial paralysis on one side.   We wish him a very speed recovery and look forward to seeing him up and about again as soon as possible.  A get well card has been sent to him on behalf of all Association members.

A bientot
